Dismantling of Climbing Stick Structure

September 19,2022

The role of the climbing stick is obvious in the process of use, such as maintaining balance, assisting uphill, braking downhill, assisting in road exploration, and assisting in building shelters. A climbing stick is generally composed of a handle, a wrist strap, a stick, an adjusting lock, a stick tip, and a stick holder.

Handle

Common materials are cork, EVA foam, and rubber.

The soft wood floor is soft and comfortable, which can fit hands well, but it's expensive and easy to wear;

EVA is soft and shockproof, can absorb sweat, but is easy to be corroded and damaged, with poor durability;

Rubber is elastic, wear-resistant, cheap, but heavier. It does not absorb sweat and is easy to slide.

Cheap handles with little professionalism usually choose rubber materials. EVA is a common handle material on the market at present. The handle made of cork will be selected for the extremely high-end mountaineering staff.

In addition to the choice of materials, there is also the distinction between a straight handle and a T handle. The T handle can be ignored. A straight handle+wrist strap is a more professional and safe choice. The material and shape of the handle can be used to directly judge the grade and specialty of the climbing stick.

Some expensive climbing sticks also have an extended grip under the handle, which is used to grasp the climbing stick in a steep cross-section. Because the mountain often has turns and steep slopes, the extended grip can help quickly change direction, rather than stop to adjust the length. For example, when walking on special terrain like a giant rock, the extended grip is very practical and convenient.

Pole shaft

The staff is the most valuable part of the whole climbing staff, which almost directly determines the weight and price of the climbing staff.

The rod is usually made of aluminum alloy, carbon fiber, and a mixture of aluminum alloy and carbon fiber.

Aluminum alloy: economical and practical, not easy to break but heavier, and aluminum alloy also has model differentiation, such as 6061 (the main element magnesium and aluminum) and 7075 (the main element zinc). 7075 is preferred. 7075 is aviation-grade aluminum, with high hardness and good wear resistance;

Carbon fiber is lighter and more fragile than aluminum alloy. In extreme cases, it may break and be more expensive. However, the advantage of the folding carbon fiber stick is that there is a great probability that you can choose to board the aircraft with your own hands instead of having to check it in.

Adjustment lock

The adjusting lock is the adjusting and locking system of the length and joint of the climbing stick, which directly reflects the stability of the climbing stick. The adjustment locks include an internal lock, external lock, and internal cable sleeve of the folding rod. The internal lock is a twist lock with a built-in expansion bolt, which is easy to be stuck and damaged after entering sediment or rusting, so the internal lock is gradually eliminated.

Crutch holder

The support is located on the small skirt a few centimeters above the tip of the stick to prevent the climbing stick from penetrating soft ground such as soil and snow. There is usually small mud support and slightly larger snow support. When walking in the snow, you can replace it with larger snow support.

Pole tip

Alloy steel and tungsten steel are common materials. Tungsten steel is preferred. The former is cheaper, while the latter is harder and harder to wear.
